Second Chance

Originally designed to offer summer tutoring to high school students with exam retakes, this project has evolved to include elementary school students

DETAILS

Second Chance was created to help combat learning loss during the summer months for both high school and elementary aged students who either have exam retakes or who have subjects that they need extra help with. Participants are paired with tutors for one-on-one sessions once or twice a week for the four weeks of July.

The program’s goal is to contribute to school perseverance and to boost our participants confidence in a comfortable and enjoyable environment.

All tutoring  sessions are offered free of charge and we make sure to offer snacks to help with concentration levels. For the younger students, working in 20-minute blocks was successful, these included intensive 1-on-1 sessions broken up with numeracy and literacy games.

Testimonials

“My daughter took part in Second Chance. This program gave her the opportunity to gain confidence and start to overcome the fear of making mistakes in her reading...being within the welcoming environment that the volunteers create allowed her to overcome her anxiety and start to take a step forward. The best outcome was listening to my daughter sound out words, to read signs and her willingness to pick up a book to read for fun. Thank you!”
