Starting Where They Are

There’s something about this photo that feels like Phelps.

No one is standing quite the same way. Some are front and centre, some have found a comfortable spot on the sidelines. There’s laughter, personality, a little chaos, and a group of kids who seem completely at ease being themselves.

As a new school year begins, that’s what we hope every young person can find: a place where they are known, supported and encouraged to keep going.

September brings fresh starts, but getting there isn’t always easy. Alarm clocks are ringing again. Lunches need packing. Bedtimes need resetting. There are new teachers, new classrooms, new expectations and, for some children, very real nerves about what the year ahead will bring.

Parents and caregivers feel that transition too. Getting everyone out the door, rebuilding routines and balancing school with everything else in family life takes work. So, as another school year gets underway, we’re cheering for you, too. The routines that can feel exhausting to rebuild are also the ones that give our kids consistency, connection and a foundation from which to grow.

At Phelps Helps, we’ve learned that supporting young people well rarely means treating everyone the same.

One student might need help working through a math problem.

Another might need a quiet place to finish homework.

Someone else may need encouragement to try something new, a snack after a long day, or simply an adult who notices when they walk through the door.

Meeting kids where they are means starting there, not where we think they should be. Then, little by little, helping them discover where they can go.

That philosophy will continue to guide us this year. Through tutoring, STEM activities, mentoring and the countless everyday moments in between, our team will be there to celebrate the wins, work through the challenges and remind young people that asking for help is part of learning.

Because progress doesn’t always look the same.

Sometimes it’s a better grade.

Sometimes it’s finally raising a hand in class, showing up when staying home would have been easier, making a new friend or trying again after getting something wrong.

The return to school won’t be perfect.

There will be forgotten lunches, rushed mornings, tough homework nights and days when everyone is tired.

But there will also be teachers who make a difference.

New friendships.

Problems that finally click.

Confidence that grows quietly.

And young people who surprise us with just how much they can do when they know someone is in their corner.
